If possible, book your Milford Sound trip towards the beginning of your Queenstown stay, rather than leaving it until your final day. It’s also worth remembering that bad weather doesn’t necessarily mean a bad day in Milford Sound. Rain is common in the fiord and can create temporary waterfalls cascading down the mountains, making the landscape look completely different.

So while you might be hoping for clear skies and sunshine, don't let a rainy forecast put you off.
In fact, rain can make Milford Sound even more spectacular. Water runs down the sheer cliffs surrounding the fiord, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls that can appear almost overnight. Some of these waterfalls disappear again once the rain stops, so a wet day can offer a completely different experience from the photos you might have seen online.
The important thing is to dress for the conditions rather than the forecast. Pack plenty of layers so you can adjust throughout the day, along with a good waterproof jacket. Waterproof trousers are also worth bringing if you have them, particularly if you're planning to spend time outside on the cruise deck.

Keep your camera ready - the landscape changes constantly, from forests and rivers to towering mountains, alpine valleys and the dramatic approach to the Homer Tunnel.

With an average annual rainfall of several metres, rain is a normal part of the Milford Sound experience and it can completely transform the landscape. Heavy rainfall sends water pouring down the sheer cliffs surrounding the fiord, creating countless temporary waterfalls that can appear within hours and disappear just as quickly once the rain stops.
On a clear, sunny day, you'll get those postcard-perfect views: dramatic mountains, blue skies, calm water and beautiful reflections across the fiord. It's easy to see why these are the conditions most commonly shown in photos.
But after a good downpour, Milford Sound can feel like a completely different place. Waterfalls seem to appear everywhere, the mountains can disappear into low cloud and mist, and the whole landscape takes on a much more dramatic atmosphere. Some of these waterfalls are only visible during or shortly after heavy rain, making them a special part of the experience.
Either way, Milford Sound is incredible - but if the rain arrives, you might just get to see it at its most dramatic.

If you're travelling by coach, choose a tour that includes plenty of scenic stops. Having time to get off the bus, stretch your legs and properly take in the scenery can make a big difference to the experience.
Driving yourself gives you more flexibility, but remember that the Milford Road is a long and sometimes challenging alpine route. Allow plenty of extra time for safe stops. Don't feel pressured to stick rigidly to your estimated arrival time, the scenery is worth slowing down for.
